Updates on Disney

Posted in Buffet, Disney World, Food Allergy, Restaurants, Traveling tagged , , , at 11:26 am by 1ElleofaWoman

I haven’t posted in a while but would like to add some updates based on a recent trip and comment on some announcements made by Disney.

Allergy Friendly MenusPancakes and Mickey Waffles

You may have already heard that Disney announced new allergy friendly menus that will roll out in the coming months. Each menu will list the allergen content for each food item, making informed choices easier. In many cases, it will eliminate the need to speak to the chef, which can take a while when the parks are busy.

You can still request to speak to the chef if you feel the need. The menus reflect the most common allergens so if you are dealing with allergies to things other than gluten/wheat, milk, peanut, tree nut and fish, you may want to speak to the chef. You may also want to speak to the chef if you are worried about cross contamination at a buffet and want to request that the chef make something special.

Feeding Food-Allergy Anxiety

Posted in Anxiety, Food Allergy, Schools at 1:22 pm by 1ElleofaWoman

According to recent media reports, a woman in Ontario is petitioning to have oak trees near a school  removed because someone *might* have a reaction.  Apparently, no one in the school has an acorn allergy.  But someone, someday, might have one.  Both the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAI) and the Food Allergy and Anaphalaxis Network agree that there is no risk of a reaction from contact with an acorn.  They are not in the same family as tree nuts (almond, walnut, hickory, pecan, cashew) and are thus those with nut allergies are not likely to be allergic to acorns.  (By the way, AAAI says chestnuts are related to acorns, so no need to panic when chestnuts are roasting by an open fire.)

I cringe when I read stories like this.  Read the rest of this entry »

Another Sad News Story

Posted in Food Allergy, Schools tagged , , , at 1:19 pm by 1ElleofaWoman

I just read a very upsetting news article, “Child dies in school from peanut allergic reaction:  Mother questions school’s actions.”  According to the news article, a seven-year-old first-grade student in Virgina died from an allergic reaction earlier this week.  My heart goes out to this family at such a senseless death.

While I don’t know all the facts, I gather from the article that there was a complete lack of education all around. Read the rest of this entry »

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall at Epcot (Dining at Walt Disney World)

Posted in Buffet, Disney World, Food Allergy, Restaurants, Traveling tagged , , , , at 9:00 am by 1ElleofaWoman

Breakfast is served family style at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall.

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, part of the Norway Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase, is one of two places inWDW where your little princess can dine with Disney Princesses.  Each table gets one free picture with Belle, which is a nice perk. The princesses we saw that day were Belle, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty,  Ariel (Little Mermaid) and Cinderella.  Cinderella was a surprise for us because we thought she could only be seen in her castle. For those on the dining plan, the meal is only one sit-down meal credit. (Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom is two.)

Breakfast is served family style and each table is served  eggs, bacon, sausage and a potato dish. Read the rest of this entry »

The Epcot Food and Wine Festival is held each fall, from the end of September through the first week of November. This is not an event that requires an extra ticket. The World Showcase is filled with booths offering food and wine (and beer) for purchase.   You may hear about “sampling” foods, but be clear that there are no free samples; everything costs money.  Read the rest of this entry »

Chef Mickey’s Restaurant at Disney’s Contemporary Resort (Dining at Walt Disney World)

Posted in Buffet, Cross Contamination, Disney World, Food Allergy, Restaurants, Traveling tagged , , , , , , at 8:00 am by 1ElleofaWoman

Chef Mickey’s restaurant is located in Disney’s Contemporary Hotel, just a short monorail ride from the Magic Kingdom. At Chef Mickey’s, you will meet various Disney characters as you dine. We met Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. They serve breakfast and dinner; both are buffets.

Chef Mickey and other characters meet and greet diners.

It is well worth noting that if you are worried about cross-contamination at a buffet, you can ask the chef to make something special. Read the rest of this entry »
